White-breasted Nuthatches

White-breasted Nuthatches get their name from their habit of whacking large seeds with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. They are famous for their unmistakable posture as they often perch upside-down on tree trunks. Although they are commonly found year-round in our area, they are easier to find in winter when they join foraging flocks led by chickadees or titmice in search of food. Be sure to include sunflower seeds, peanuts, suet, and peanut butter on your bird feeder menu.
