Ruby-throated Hummingbird
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is eastern North America’s sole breeding hummingbird. These tiny creatures are unique in that they can hover and even fly backwards while beating their wings at an astonishing rate of over 50 beats per second. Although common in Eagles Mere all summer long, they migrate across the Gulf of Mexico all the way to Central America early in the fall season, an amazing feat. Hummingbirds can typically be seen feeding on the nectar of red, pink, or orange flowers, but it is easiest to view them feeding at a hummingbird feeder.
