Charcoal Portraiture with Marcelo Daldoce

Classes are July 7, July 8, and July 9, @ 9 AM – Noon. The first day features a live model; subsequent sessions will utilize students’ personal photos. In this engaging and hands-on class, students will explore the art of portrait drawing using charcoal. Through a series of demonstrations and practice sessions, participants will learn fundamental techniques such as shading, blending, and line control, enabling them to capture the likeness and personality of their subjects.

  • Head anatomy
  • Understand the properties of charcoal and how to manipulate it to achieve various effects.
  • Learn the fundamentals of facial proportions and features.
  • Develop skills in creating depth and texture and valued through effective shading techniques.
  • Engage in life drawing from a live model to practice observation and capture the essence of human expression than we move to the participants photos.

Who Should Attend: This class is suitable for all skill levels, from beginners looking to explore portraiture for the first time to more experienced artists seeking to refine their technique with charcoal.

Materials Needed: Students may be required to bring their own supplies, which includes charcoal pencils, vine charcoal, kneaded erasers, and suitable drawing paper. A list of specific materials will be provided upon registration.

The class may include demonstrations, individual practice time, and personalized feedback from the instructor. Students will have the opportunity to create several portraits throughout the course and build a portfolio of their work.

About Marcelo Daldoce

Marcelo Daldoce is a Brazilian artist living and working in Philadelphia. In 2016, he received his MFA from the New York Academy of Art and has earned residencies at the Leipzig International Art Program in Germany and the Eric Fischl Residency in Maryland. Daldoce has exhibited in museums in Austria and Brazil, as well as at art fairs and in private collections. His work has also been featured in group exhibits in Brazil, New York City, Sotheby’s, and many other galleries around the world, as well as on the covers of various art publications and mainstream magazines like There and GQ. Daldoce was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant in 2017 and 2019.
